Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a thin acrylic coating applied to a patient’s back teeth to establish a barrier against bacteria and other harmful materials. They also smooth out rough surfaces and make the teeth easier to clean as a whole.

A person’s back teeth are known for having many deep grooves and fissures. These particular spaces make excellent breeding grounds for bacteria and plaque. Interestingly, nearly 75% of all tooth decay exists in these spots. If bacteria and plaque are allowed to accumulate, it is very likely that serious damage will follow.

Dental sealants work to block off these spots and establish a barrier against bacteria and plaque. This helps to keep the teeth underneath them clean and protected. Sealants are also appropriate for patients of all ages. Children often greatly benefit from dental sealants. However, many adults also receive dental sealants as a way of protecting their teeth from damage.

When applying dental sealants, we start by thoroughly cleaning any tooth that is designated for treatment. We then treat the teeth with an acidic etching solution to roughen their outer surfaces. This will help the sealant coating bond with the teeth more easily. The sealant material is then painted over the teeth, and our experts make sure that the teeth are covered completely. Once the sealants are dry, our team checks to make sure that the teeth are protected and adequately smoothed out.

After receiving dental sealants, it is very important that they are maintained properly. This includes brushing twice per day and flossing at least one per day. Patients should also make sure to receive complete dental checkups at least twice per year. Although sealants can be very effective in protecting one’s teeth, they should not be used as a substitute for regular oral hygiene. With proper care, a set of dental sealants should last for about ten years.
